Discover Cava Carosello, a hidden gem in the heart of the Noto Valley, where history, nature, and culture intertwine in a landscape of extraordinary beauty. Located near the Baroque city of Noto, this valley, shaped by centuries, tells the stories of the peoples who inhabited and transformed it—from prehistoric civilizations to Arab and Norman dominations—leaving traces still visible in the landscape and remaining structures.
During the tour, we will visit the ruins of the ancient tanneries, a fundamental part of the local economy in the past. The Cava Carosello tanneries were used for leather processing from medieval times, and here you’ll learn about the artisanal techniques passed down over centuries. The limestone structures and ancient water mills that powered the quarry’s activities are witnesses to a vibrant and industrious past that enabled the growth of a flourishing community.
Another natural wonder we’ll admire is the famous hanging lake, a small oasis of peace and freshness nestled among the rocks and surrounded by typical Mediterranean vegetation. Here, visitors will have the chance to take a refreshing swim in the clear waters of the lake, offering a moment of relaxation and direct contact with the surrounding nature.
We cannot overlook the impact of the 1693 earthquake, one of the most devastating tragedies in Sicilian history, which destroyed much of the area, including the city of Noto. We’ll recount how the earthquake profoundly marked the region, leading to Noto’s rebirth in a new Baroque style and a rethinking of the area’s social and productive structures.
A tour of Cava Carosello is more than just a walk; it’s a journey into Sicilian history and culture, an opportunity to rediscover the roots of a land rich in traditions, immersed in a natural landscape of rare beauty.
