Ancient Noto

Ancient Noto, located near present-day Noto in Sicily, is a site rich in history and unique features. Destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1693, the original city was abandoned, and its inhabitants relocated to rebuild what is now known as Noto. Among the remnants of this ancient settlement are the old tanneries, which reflect the city’s once-thriving leather production, essential to its medieval economy. These tanneries, carved into limestone, highlight the ingenuity of past artisans. Another notable feature is the “laghetto pensile,” a small hanging lake that served as a vital water source for the community.

Today, the ruins of Ancient Noto offer a glimpse into the resilience and craftsmanship of its people, drawing historians and visitors interested in Sicily’s rich heritage.
